What the Freak is Fracking
Daily Tech and Science #-1502
Fracking, short for hydraulic fracturing, is a process used to extract natural gas and oil from deep underground. Here's how it works:
1. Drilling: A well is drilled deep into the ground, often thousands of feet.
2. Turning Horizontal: The drill bit is turned to drill horizontally, following the layer of rock containing the gas or oil.
3. Fracking Fluid: A mixture of water, sand, and chemicals is pumped into the well at high pressure.
4. Fracturing: The high pressure cracks the rock, creating pathways for the gas or oil to flow.
5. Extraction: The gas or oil flows up the well and is collected at the surface.
Why Frack?
* Access to Resources: Fracking allows us to reach natural gas and oil trapped in shale rock, which was previously difficult to extract.
* Energy Supply: It helps meet our energy needs, providing fuel for heating, electricity, and transportation.
Concerns About Fracking
* Environmental Impact: Fracking can use large amounts of water and may release chemicals into the environment.
* Earthquakes: In some cases, fracking has been linked to small earthquakes.
* Water Contamination: There are concerns about the potential for fracking fluids to contaminate groundwater.
